An Ancient City

Philippi was an important city a long time ago in Greece. It was first called Crenides, which means “Fountains.” Later, a king named Philip II of Macedon renamed it Philippi.

The city became a busy place and was part of the strong Roman Empire. Today, people can visit the old ruins of Philippi. In 2016, it was named a World Heritage Site because of its special Roman architecture.

A Place for Christians

Philippi is also important for early Christianity. The apostle Paul visited the city and helped start one of the first Christian communities there. Many people learned about Christian teachings because of this city.

Near the old city, there is now a small village called Filippoi. It is close to the modern city of Kavala, in the region of East Macedonia and Thrace.
