Who Was Pindar?

Pindar was a poet who lived a very long time ago in Ancient Greece. He grew up in a city called Thebes. People think he was one of the greatest poets ever because his poems are very beautiful, even if they can be hard to understand.

Pindar's Poems

Pindar wrote many special poems called lyric poems. These poems tell us about the beliefs and values of people who lived in Archaic Greece. He liked to write about how people can do great things with help from the gods.

One of his famous poems says: "Creatures of a day! What is anyone? What is anyone not? A dream of a shadow Is our mortal being. But when there comes to men A gleam of splendour given of heaven, Then rests on them a light of glory And blessed are their days."
