What is a Planetarium?
A planetarium is a special kind of theatre where you can see amazing shows about the night sky. Inside, there is a big dome-shaped screen. On this screen, you can see beautiful pictures of the stars, planets, and other celestial objects. These pictures move just like they do in the real sky, making you feel like you are looking up at space.
Fun Facts About Planetariums
Planetariums come in all different sizes. Some are very large, like the one in St. Petersburg, Russia. Others are small and can even be set up in a classroom! The biggest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere is at the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey. In India, the Birla Planetarium, Kolkata can seat the most people.
Inside a planetarium, you can learn about the Solar System and see how the sky looks from different places. Many planetariums have a friendly speaker who tells stories about the stars and answers questions. Some even show special 3-D pictures that make you feel like you are flying through space!
History of Planetariums
Long ago, smart people like Archimedes made simple tools to show how the Sun and Moon move. In 1923, the very first modern planetarium was created in Munich. Since then, many more planetariums have been built all around the world. Today, you can find planetariums in schools, museums, and even on the move with portable shows.
