Polar Bear

The polar bear is a big, white bear that lives in the cold Arctic. It is the largest bear alive today! Polar bears have thick, white fur and black skin under the fur. This helps them stay warm in very cold places.

Polar bears spend much of their time on sea ice. They like to walk, swim, and rest there. When the ice melts in summer, they go to land near the Arctic Ocean. These bears are good swimmers and can stay in the water for many hours.

People know about polar bears because they are special symbols of the Arctic. They appear in stories, art, and even some advertisements. Many people care about polar bears because their home, the sea ice, is changing. Countries work together to protect these wonderful animals and their icy world.

Polar bears are also called by other names. The Inuit people call them nanook. In old times, people called them “white bear” or “ice bear.” No matter what you call them, polar bears are amazing creatures of the snow and ice!
