All About Potatoes
Potatoes are yummy vegetables that grow underground. They are very popular all around the world and are a main food for many people. Potatoes come from a plant called Solanum tuberosum, which is part of the nightshade family, just like the tomato.
People first started growing potatoes a very long time ago, about 7,000 to 10,000 years ago, in places that are now Peru and Bolivia. Wild potatoes also grow from the southern United States to southern Chile. The Spanish brought potatoes to Europe in the late 1500s, and now they are grown everywhere.
Potato plants can grow up to one metre (three feet) tall. They have hairy stems and leaves with four pairs of leaflets. The flowers can be white, pink, blue, or purple. Potatoes grow underground as parts called tubers. These tubers have “eyes,” which can grow into new plants.
Today, there are over 5,000 different kinds of potatoes! Some are better for baking, while others are best for boiling or making French fries. Potatoes are a good source of vitamin C and potassium, and they help give us energy.
Potatoes are used in many tasty dishes around the world. In the UK, people love fish and chips and mashed potatoes. In Peru, there are many special potato dishes. Potatoes can also be turned into vodka and used in many other ways besides eating.
In old stories, potatoes were very important. In Inca mythology, there was a goddess called Axomamma who was the goddess of potatoes. Even today, potatoes are loved by many and are a big part of meals in many countries.
