What is Pottery?

Pottery is the fun way we make bowls, cups, and many other useful things from clay. We shape the clay into what we need and then heat it up to make it strong and lasting. Pottery is one of the oldest human inventions. The very first pottery vessels were found in Jiangxi, China, and they are very, very old — from 18,000 BC!

Pottery can be found all over the world. People in Jōmon Japan, the Russian Far East, Sub-Saharan Africa, South America, and the Middle East all made their own special kinds of pottery. Each place had its own way of making and decorating pottery, which makes learning about it very interesting.

How is Pottery Made?

Making pottery is like magic with clay! First, we take clay — a soft, squishy material — and shape it into anything we like. We can pinch it, coil it, or even spin it on a potter's wheel to make nice, round cups and bowls. After shaping, the clay goes into a special oven called a kiln and is heated to very high temperatures. This makes the clay hard and strong forever.

Sometimes, pottery is just plain and simple, but often it is decorated! People paint on it, glaze it (which makes it shiny), or carve designs into it. This makes each piece unique and beautiful. Some pottery is made to be useful, like for cooking, while other pieces are made just to look nice and show off special skills.

Why Do We Love Pottery?

Pottery helps us learn about the past. Because it lasts a long time, archaeologists can find old pieces and learn about the people who made them. By looking at the shapes, designs, and decorations, we can discover what life was like a long time ago in different parts of the world. Pottery tells us stories about China, Japan, Germany, and many other places.

Pottery also helps us in our daily lives. Bowls and plates made from pottery can keep our food safe and tasty. Special kinds of pottery, like earthenware and stoneware, are chosen for cooking because they hold heat well and keep food delicious. And the prettiest kind, porcelain, is often used for fancy dishes and decorations.

Different Kinds of Pottery

There are three main types of pottery, each with its own special qualities:

  • Earthenware: This is the oldest kind. It is made from clay baked at low heat. It can let water through unless it is covered with a glaze.
  • Stoneware: Baked at higher heat, this kind is strong and does not let water through. It is popular in China, Japan, and Germany.
  • Porcelain: The strongest and prettiest type, made at the highest heat. It began in China and later spread to Korea and Japan.

Each type of pottery has its own special look and feel, making the world of pottery very exciting and full of wonderful discoveries!
