What Is Reconstructionist Judaism?

Reconstructionist Judaism is a special way of practicing Judaism. It was started by a rabbi named Mordecai Kaplan. He thought that Judaism should change and grow, like a living thing, instead of staying exactly the same.

A Changing Way of Life

Reconstructionist Judaism began inside another group called Conservative Judaism in the 1920s and 1940s. It became its own group in 1955. Today, it is one of the five main Jewish groups in America.

In this way of Judaism, old rules called Halakha are not strict. People can choose how they follow Jewish traditions to fit modern life. This means they can decide together what works best for them.

Fun and Friendly Places

There are over 100 synagogues and groups, called havurot, mostly in the United States and Canada. They have a special school for training rabbis and a summer camp named Camp Havaya in South Sterling, Pennsylvania.

Reconstructionist Judaism welcomes everyone and believes that Jewish traditions should change to fit new times. It is a friendly and open community where people can share ideas and grow together.
