Welcome to San Marino!
San Marino is a very tiny country in Southern Europe. It is completely surrounded by Italy, like a little island inside a bigger one. It sits on the slopes of the Apennine Mountains and is one of the smallest countries in the world!
San Marino is named after Saint Marinus, a stonemason who started a community there long ago. The country is very old, and people say it has been around since the year AD 301. That makes it one of the oldest countries still existing today.

San Marino is the fifth-smallest country in the world. It is only a little bigger than a big city. The whole country is about 61 square kilometres, which is smaller than many parks!
The country has two leaders called Captains Regent. They change every six months, so it’s like having new captains for the team twice a year!
San Marino uses the euro as its money, just like many other European countries. Even though it is very small, it is very rich and one of the wealthiest places in the world.

People in San Marino speak Italian, and they also have their own special way of talking called Sammarinese. The country is known for its beautiful views, especially from Monte Titano, which has three old towers on top. These towers are very important and can be seen on the country’s flag.
San Marino likes to stay friendly with other countries. It is a member of the Council of Europe but is not part of the European Union. The people there enjoy many festivals and celebrations throughout the year, and they love sports, especially football.

Even though San Marino is small, there is much to see and do. Visitors can ride a fun cable car up the mountain, explore old museums, and enjoy tasty food that is similar to Italian dishes. One famous treat is a chocolate-covered cake called Torta Tre Monti, shaped like the three towers.
