What is Selective Breeding?
Selective breeding is a way that people help animals and plants change over time. It means choosing which animals or plants will have babies together. This helps create new types of pets, farm animals, and plants that have special traits. For example, we have many kinds of dogs and cats because of selective breeding. We also have different types of fruits and flowers because of it.
Why Do People Use It?
People have used selective breeding for thousands of years. It started when humans began farming. They chose plants that grew well or tasted better to plant again. They also chose animals that gave more food or wool to let them have babies. This made our food and pets better over time.
How Does It Work?
When people breed animals, they look for certain traits they like. For example, a farmer might want chickens that lay lots of eggs. They will choose the best chickens for this and let them have chicks. For plants, farmers might pick the biggest and sweetest fruits to grow more of. This careful choosing helps create new types of animals and plants.
Fun Facts
Selective breeding helped us get many of the plants and animals we use today. It made our crops better and our pets more special. Even fish and shellfish are now being selectively bred to grow faster and stay healthy. This clever way of choosing helps us every day!
