The Siberian Yupik People

The Siberian Yupik people are a special group who live along the coast of the Chukchi Peninsula in the far northeast of the Russian Federation and also on St. Lawrence Island in Alaska. They are part of the larger Yupik people.

These people speak Central Siberian Yupik, a special language from the Yupik language family. It is very important to them, and they work hard to keep it alive. One way they do this is by using a special dictionary called the St. Lawrence Island/Siberian Yupik Eskimo Dictionary.

Long ago, the Siberian Yupik lived in special round houses called yaranga in the winter. Inside, they had a warm space for sleeping and a bigger area for daily life. They also made beautiful carvings from walrus ivory and other materials.

The Siberian Yupik have many interesting stories and beliefs about animals. They respected animals like orcas, wolves, and ravens, believing these animals could help them in many ways. These stories helped teach important lessons to younger generations.
