What is Siccar Point?

Siccar Point is a rocky place on the east coast of Scotland, in the county of Berwickshire. It is a special spot for people who study rocks and how they change over time, called geology.

An Important Discovery

A long time ago, in 1788, a smart man named James Hutton visited Siccar Point. He found something very interesting in the rocks, called Hutton's Unconformity. This helped show that the Earth changes very slowly over millions of years, which is known as the uniformitarian idea.

Why People Remember It

Because of this discovery, Siccar Point became important for scientists who study the Earth. It shows how old rock layers were moved and covered by newer rocks, helping us learn about our planet's long history. In October 2022, it was chosen as one of the first 100 important geological sites in the world by the International Union of Geological Sciences.
