Sloths

Sloths are special animals that live in the tall trees of warm, rainy forests in South America and Central America. They are known for moving very slowly, which helps keep them safe. Sloths have soft fur that even has tiny green plants living in it, helping them blend into the trees.

There are two main kinds of sloths today: three-toed sloths and two-toed sloths. All sloths have three toes on their back legs, no matter what they are called. They like to hang upside down from branches and spend lots of time sleeping. Sloths eat leaves, but they also sometimes eat fruits and insects.

Long ago, there were huge sloths that lived on the ground, much bigger than today’s sloths. These giant sloths are called ground sloths and lived many thousands of years before disappearing. Scientists think changes in the weather may have affected them.

Sloths are not good pets because they need special care and lots of space to stay healthy. In places like Costa Rica, sloths sometimes face danger from things like electrical wires, but many people work to protect them and their homes.
