All About Snakes
Snakes are long, wiggly friends without legs that live all around the world! They belong to a group called serpents. These amazing creatures are cold-blooded, which means they need sunshine or warm places to stay cozy.
Where Do Snakes Live?
You can find snakes almost everywhere except Antarctica! They live in forests, deserts, grasslands, and even in the sea. Some snakes, called sea snakes, can swim and stay underwater for a long time. There are over 4,000 different kinds of snakes, from tiny ones like the Barbados threadsnake, which is about as long as a pencil, to big ones like the reticulated python, which can be as long as a school bus!
What Makes Snakes Special?
Snakes have bodies covered in smooth, overlapping scales that help them slide easily. Most snakes have only one lung to breathe. Their special jaws can stretch super wide, letting them swallow big meals whole. Some snakes can even eat animals larger than their own heads!
How Do Snakes Stay Safe?
Many snakes have a special juice called venom that helps them catch food. But don’t worry—most snakes are not dangerous to people. They usually stay away from us and only use their venom when they need to catch dinner. Some snakes catch their food by wrapping around it tightly, like a hug!
Snakes are important for nature because they help keep the number of mice and other small animals just right. They are also part of many stories and traditions in different cultures.
