What is the South American Plate?

The South American plate is a big piece of Earth's outer layer, called a tectonic plate. It holds the whole continent of South America and part of the Atlantic Ocean floor.

Where is It Located?

This plate stretches far to the east and touches the African plate. It also meets the Antarctic plate, the Scotia plate, and the Sandwich Plate to the south. On its west side, it pushes up against the Nazca plate. To the north, it touches the Caribbean plate and the North American plate.

Why is it Important?

The South American plate is moving slowly to the west. This movement helped create the tall Andes Mountains and many volcanoes on the west side of South America. These changes help scientists learn more about our amazing Earth!
