Welcome to South San Francisco

South San Francisco is a busy city in San Mateo County, California. It sits on the San Francisco Peninsula in the lively San Francisco Bay Area. Many people call it “South City” for short.

The city has many places to explore and lots of people living there. It is known for its factories and businesses that help the area grow.

A Little History

Long ago, the Ramaytush people, part of the Ohlone group, lived in what is now South San Francisco. They had villages and camps there.

Later, in the 1800s, the land became a big Mexican ranch for cattle. New settlers came and started towns. By the late 1800s, companies began building factories and homes. The city became official in 1908 and was called “The Industrial City.” Today, it is a busy place with many people living and working.

Fun Things to See

South San Francisco has a big hillside sign that spells out “South San Francisco, The Industrial City.” This sign is a special landmark you can see from far away.

The city also has many parks where you can play sports, have picnics, and enjoy the outdoors. Some parks even have swimming pools and playgrounds.

Every year, some neighborhoods decorate their houses with bright lights for the holiday season, and people come from all over to see them. The city has places to bowl, play sports, and even a golf club.

Getting Around

South San Francisco is next to the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). There is a BART station that makes it easy to visit SFO and cities like San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. The city has free shuttles that go to stores, libraries, and parks. There are also bikes you can rent to explore the city.
