Speed Climbing
Speed climbing is a fun and exciting way for climbers to test how fast they can go up a wall. Climbers race to see who can reach the top the quickest. They climb on special walls made just for this sport, but sometimes they also climb on big rock faces in nature.
In competitions, climbers race up a 15-meter wall. The wall is special because it is the same for everyone, so it’s a fair race. Climbers use a special system to help them climb quickly and safely. The International Federation of Sport Climbing sets the rules for these races.
Speed climbing became an Olympic sport in 2020 and is now a standalone event. Famous climbers like Matteo Zurloni from Italy and Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi from Indonesia have won big races. The fastest times ever recorded are very quick—just a few seconds!
Climbers also try speed records on famous big walls, like El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. These climbs are very challenging and take many hours, but some climbers have done them in record times.
Speed climbing is all about fun, challenge, and seeing how fast you can go up a wall!
