Welcome to Tórshavn
Tórshavn is the capital city of the Faroe Islands. It is a cozy place where about 14,000 people live, and with nearby areas, around 22,000 call it home. The city sits on the east side of the island called Streymoy.
Long ago, around the year 850, people from Norse and Scandinavians traditions started their parliament on a special place called the Tinganes peninsula. That is why Tórshavn became the capital of the Faroe Islands and has stayed that way for a very long time.
Tórshavn has many fun places to see. You can visit old wooden houses with grass roofs, some over 500 years old! There is also a beautiful cathedral and a historic fort called Skansin. The city has a busy harbour where ferries come and go. Buses in red colours make it easy to get around, and riding them is free!
People love to play sports in Tórshavn. The biggest football stadium is Tórsvøllur, where the Faroe Islands national football team plays. There are also places for tennis, swimming, and even rowing. Every July, a fun bicycle race called the Tour of Faroe Islands finishes in Tórshavn.
Tórshavn is full of history and fun. It is a special place where past and present come together.
