Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays are a fun baseball team from the Tampa Bay area in Florida. They play in Major League Baseball (MLB) and are part of the American League East Division.

The Rays started playing in 1998 Major League Baseball season as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. In 2008, they changed their name to the Rays. The new name is inspired by manta rays and rays of sunshine. That year, they had their first winning season and won the American League, but lost the World Series.

Since then, the Rays have made the postseason many times, including winning the American League again in 2020. They have strong rivalries with the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, both teams in the AL East. They also have a rivalry with the Miami Marlins, their fellow Florida team.

The Rays play their home games at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Tropicana Field is a special stadium with a dome roof. Fans love to ring cowbells during games, especially when the other team is having a tough time. The team has fun mascots like Raymond, a sea dog, and DJ Kitty, a big cat character, who dance and play music to get everyone excited.

The Rays have had many great players over the years. Some of the team’s best single-season performances include:

The Rays have their own Hall of Fame that started in 2023. Some of the players and people honored include Don Zimmer, Wade Boggs, and Carl Crawford. The Rays have retired three numbers, and Evan Longoria’s number 3 will join them on July 12, 2026. Every team in baseball retired Jackie Robinson’s number 42 in 1997, so no Rays player has ever worn that number.

The Rays are a fun and exciting team with lots of history and great memories!
