Meet the Terrapins

Terrapins are special kinds of turtles that love to live in fresh or slightly salty water. They are not like sea turtles, because they have claws on their feet instead of flippers. You can find them in places like ponds, marshes, and slow-moving rivers.

Where Do They Live?

Terrapins live all over the world! Some live in North America, like the diamondback terrapin. Others are found in Asia, such as the painted terrapin. There are even terrapins in Africa, like the West African mud turtle.

What Do They Eat?

Terrapins eat many things! Some like to munch on small fish, frogs, and insects. Others might also eat plants, like leaves and stems. It depends on the kind of terrapin!

Fun Facts

  • The name “terrapin” comes from an old Algonquian languages word. People first used it for the diamondback terrapin.
  • Terrapins often bask in the sun to warm up. You might see them sitting on a log or rock by the water.
  • Some terrapins can live a very long time — up to 40 years or more!

Terrapins are wonderful creatures that help keep their water homes healthy. Next time you visit a pond or a lake, look closely — you might spot a terrapin enjoying the sunshine!
