What Is Thrombosis?

Thrombosis is when a tiny clump called a blood clot forms inside a blood vessel. This clot can slow down or stop blood from flowing where it should go.

Our bodies sometimes make clots to help stop bleeding when we get a cut. These clots are made from tiny parts in the blood called platelets and a special substance called fibrin.

Where Can It Happen?

Thrombosis can happen in two main types of blood vessels: veins and arteries.

  • In veins, a common place for clots is in the legs. This is called deep vein thrombosis. Signs include swelling, pain, and redness in the leg.
  • In arteries, clots can block blood to important parts like the heart or brain. This can lead to a stroke or a heart attack.

Why Do We Know About It?

Doctors and scientists study thrombosis to help people stay healthy. They have found ways to prevent clots and treat them if they happen. Learning about thrombosis helps doctors keep blood flowing properly and prevents serious health problems.
