The Toltec People

The Toltec people were an ancient group who lived in Mexico many years ago. Their city was called Tula, which is in a place now known as Hidalgo. They lived between about 950 and 1150 CE, which is a very long time before today.

Many years later, the Aztec people thought very highly of the Toltec. They believed the Toltec were great teachers and leaders. The Aztec called their home place "Tōllān", which means Tula in their language. They told stories about the Toltec being very wise and skilled.

Skilled Workers and Artists

In the language of the Aztec, the word for a Toltec, "Tōltēkatl", means "artisan". This shows how clever and talented the Toltec were thought to be. They made beautiful things like pottery and buildings. One example is a clay vessel, which looks like a small jar, that shows their artistic style.

Buildings and Trade

The Toltec built amazing structures in their city of Tula. They had special buildings such as pyramids and places to play a game called the ball game. These buildings had unique designs that were also found in other places, like Chichén Itzá. The Toltec were also good at trading. They worked with valuable materials like obsidian, a kind of glass-like rock that was very useful.

The Toltec people left behind many reminders of their skills and cleverness. Even though much about them is still a mystery, their legacy lives on in the stories and buildings they created.
