Toothed Whales
Toothed whales are a special group of sea animals. They include dolphins, porpoises, beaked whales, and sperm whales. There are 73 different kinds of toothed whales! They are different from another group of whales called baleen whales, which do not have teeth.
Toothed whales come in many sizes. The smallest is the vaquita, about as long as a big sofa. The largest is the sperm whale, which can be as long as a school bus! They have smooth bodies and flippers to help them swim. Some can zoom through the water as fast as a bicycle on a flat road.
These whales live in oceans all around the world. Some stay in one place, like the vaquita, while others travel far. They love to eat fish and squid, but some, like the orca, also eat sea mammals such as seals. Their mothers take good care of their babies, who are born in the warm months of spring or summer.
People used to hunt whales for things they could make from them, but now there are rules to protect them. Toothed whales are very smart and can talk to each other with special sounds. Watching whales in the ocean is a fun activity that many people enjoy. Some small toothed whales, especially dolphins, live in special places where they can show tricks to visitors.
