Meet the Tortoise

Tortoises are special kinds of reptiles that live on land. They are part of a big group called Testudines. What makes tortoises special is their hard shell that covers their bodies. They can pull their heads and legs inside this shell when they feel unsafe.

Tortoises come in many sizes. Some, like the Galápagos giant tortoise, are very big and can grow longer than a grown-up’s arm. Others, like the tiny speckled Cape tortoise, are small enough to fit in your hands.

Most tortoises are awake during the day and like quiet places where they can be alone. They are famous for living very, very long lives. Some tortoises can live for over 150 years, which is longer than many other land animals!

Where Do Tortoises Live?

Tortoises live in many warm places around the world. You can find them in deserts, grasslands, and forests. They are especially loved on islands like the Galapagos Islands and Aldabra Atoll. These places are far away from busy cities, which makes them perfect homes for tortoises.

Tortoises like to eat plants such as grasses, leaves, and flowers. Each kind of tortoise has its own favorite foods. Because they move slowly, tortoises need to find food that stays in one place for a while.

Tortoises in Our Lives

Tortoises have been important in many cultures. In Hinduism, a tortoise named Kurma was one of the forms of the god Vishnu. People in China and Japan thought tortoises had magic powers and used their shells for special traditions.

In 1968, two Russian tortoises flew around the Moon on a spacecraft called Zond 5. They came back safely, showing how tough and special tortoises can be!
