United States Congress
The United States Congress is the group that makes laws for the federal government of the United States. It has two parts: the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Together, they make rules for the whole country and meet in a big building called the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C..
There are 535 people who work in Congress: 100 senators and 435 representatives. Senators are chosen to work for six years, and representatives are chosen for two years. Every state has two senators, no matter how big or small it is. The number of representatives a state has depends on how many people live there.
Members of Congress must be at least 25 years old to be in the House and 30 years old to be in the Senate. They also need to be U.S. citizens for some years and live in the state they represent. Most of them belong to one of two big groups, called the Democratic Party or the Republican Party.
Congress is very important because it helps make laws. It also controls money, decides how to spend it, and watches over the government. The people in Congress work together to make sure everything runs smoothly and fairly for everyone in the United States.
