Valentina Tereshkova
Valentina Tereshkova was a special person who loved the sky and space. She was born on March 6, 1937, in a small village called Bolshoye Maslennikovo near the Volga River in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia. Her parents were from Belarus. When she was very young, her father passed away, and her mother moved the family to Yaroslavl for better jobs.
Valentina loved adventure and learned to skydiving when she was 22 years old. She also worked at a factory and studied on her own. Later, she joined a group for young people called the Komsomol.
In 1963, Valentina made history! She became the first woman in space when she flew alone on Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963. She flew around the Earth 48 times and spent almost three days in space. She was only twenty-six years old, making her the youngest woman to ever fly in space. After her flight, she landed safely with a parachute.
Valentina became very famous and traveled to many countries, sharing her story and inspiring others, especially girls and women. She also worked in politics and was elected to the national parliament in 2011. She helped protect important cultural values and supported changes to the country’s constitution.
Valentina’s brave journey inspired many people. Places, monuments, and even a lunar crater were named after her. She carried the Olympic torch for both the Summer and Winter Games, showing how much people admired her achievements.
