The Visigothic Kingdom
The Visigothic Kingdom was a special place that ruled parts of what is now France and the Iberian Peninsula a long time ago, from the 5th to the 8th century. It started after a big change called the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
The Visigoths were a group of people who moved from places near the Danube Valley. They helped protect the Roman Empire before it fell. After that, they made their own kingdom in places like Hispania.
Later, the Visigoths moved their capital to a city called Toledo in Hispania. They ruled most of the Iberian Peninsula for a while. But in the early 8th century, soldiers from North Africa took over their kingdom.
The Visigoths made important laws that helped shape how people lived for many years. Their legal ideas influenced later Spanish law. They also built beautiful cities and kept old traditions alive, mixing them with new ideas.
The Visigoths were known for keeping learning alive during a time called the Dark Ages. They loved books and learning. One smart person, Isidore of Seville, wrote a big book called Etymologies that many people read for years.
Even though times were hard, the Visigoths left behind many treasures and ideas that people still remember today.
