Volleyball
Volleyball is a fun and exciting team sport where players work together to send a ball over a net. It is played by two teams, and the goal is to hit the ball onto the other team’s side. Volleyball is enjoyed all around the world and is even part of the Summer Olympic Games!
The sport was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a teacher at a YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He created it as a calmer game compared to basketball. At first, it was called “mintonette,” but people noticed the ball was volleyed back and forth a lot, so they renamed it volleyball.
Volleyball is played on a court split by a net. Each team has six players, and they take turns sending the ball over the net. The other team must return the ball within three touches. Points are scored when the ball lands on the other team’s side or when the other team makes a mistake.
There are many fun ways to play volleyball! One popular version is beach volleyball, played on sand with just two players per team. Volleyball can also be played sitting down, called sitting volleyball, which is part of the Paralympic Games.
Volleyball is loved for its teamwork and excitement. Players practice different skills like serving, passing, setting, and spiking to become better. Whether you play on a court or at the beach, volleyball is a great way to have fun and stay active!
