Welcome to West Texas
West Texas is a big, dry area in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the part of Texas that is west of cities like Wichita Falls and Abilene. People love to talk about West Texas and East Texas, but there are no strict lines that separate them.
Nature and Land
West Texas has a very dry climate. It does not get much rain, so the land looks a bit like a desert. Some parts are very flat, like the Llano Estacado, which stretches into Eastern New Mexico. Other areas have small hills and even a few mountains. In the winter, some of the higher places can get a little snow, but it is rare.
Cities and Towns
Many smaller cities and towns call West Texas home. The biggest city is El Paso, which has over 600,000 people. Other important cities include Lubbock, Midland, and Abilene. These cities are centers for jobs, schools, and fun places to visit.
Work and Energy
People in West Texas do many kinds of work. They raise animals and grow cotton and grain. The area also has lots of oil and natural gas, which helps power many places. Recently, West Texas has become famous for its many wind turbines, which make clean energy for the world.
Fun and Games
Even though West Texas does not have big sports teams like some other places, people love their local teams. You can watch high school football, college games, or even baseball games from teams like the El Paso Chihuahuas and the Midland RockHounds. It is a place where everyone comes together to cheer for their favorite teams!
