William Howard Taft

William Howard Taft was a very important person in American history. He was the 27th president of the United States and later became the 10th chief justice of the United States. He is the only person to have done both jobs.

Taft was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in a place called Mount Auburn. His father was a judge, and his family encouraged him to work hard. He went to Yale College and later to Cincinnati Law School to study law. He worked hard and did very well in school.

After studying, Taft became a lawyer. He helped people solve problems and later became a judge. In 1908, he became president with the help of Theodore Roosevelt. As president, Taft worked on making friends with countries in East Asia and Latin America. He also helped organize the government and supported fair business rules.

After his time as president, Taft returned to teaching at Yale. But his big dream came true in 1921 when he became the chief justice. In this job, he helped make important decisions about laws and how the government worked. He served until he passed away in 1930.

Taft was also known for his kind heart. He helped build the Lincoln Memorial and supported groups that worked for peace. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, a special place to honor important people.
