What Is Winter?

Winter is the coldest time of the year. It is a special season that brings snow, ice, and longer nights. In many places, winter makes the days shorter and the nights longer. This happens because the Earth tilts and turns away from the Sun.

When Does Winter Happen?

Winter comes after autumn and before spring. In the Northern Hemisphere, winter is usually in December, January, and February. In the Southern Hemisphere, winter is in June, July, and August. During winter, the Sun is lower in the sky, so it feels colder.

Fun Winter Facts

During winter, many animals change their behavior to stay warm. Some birds fly to warmer places. Others, like squirrels, save food to eat later. Some animals, like the Arctic fox, change their fur color to match the snow.

Winter is also a magical time for people. Many places have special festivals and traditions. People enjoy activities like skating, building snow angels, and having cozy nights by the fire.

Why Do We Have Winter?

Winter happens because the Earth is tilted on its axis. When a part of the Earth turns away from the Sun, it becomes winter there. The part that faces the Sun has summer. This is why when it is winter in one place, it is summer somewhere else!
