Welcome to Aachen

Aachen is a lovely city in Germany. It is the westernmost big city in the country, close to the borders of Belgium and the Netherlands. About 261,000 people live here, making it a cozy place to call home.

A City with History

Aachen has a very long history. People have lived here for about 5,000 years! It started as a small settlement of the Celtic people. Later, the Romans built a spa town around its warm springs. The city became very important during the time of the Frankish Empire. A famous king named Charlemagne built his palace here. Many important kings and queens were crowned in Aachen before the ceremonies moved to another city, Frankfurt.

Fun Things to See

Today, Aachen is full of interesting places to visit. The Aachen Cathedral is a special building where many kings were crowned. Inside, you can see beautiful decorations and learn about its history. The cathedral is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, which means it is very important and protected.

Another fun spot is the Elisenbrunnen, a famous fountain with a lovely hall nearby. You can also visit the Ponttor and Marschiertor, two old city gates that still stand tall today. The city also has many museums, like the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum, where you can see amazing sculptures and art.

Tasty Treats and Celebrations

Aachen is famous for its special kind of gingerbread called Aachener Printen. These treats are made with sugar syrup instead of honey and are a sweet delight for anyone who visits. The city also loves to celebrate with colorful carnival events, where families dress up in fun costumes and have a great time together.

A Place for Learning

Aachen is also a place for learning and innovation. The city is home to the RWTH Aachen University, one of the best technical universities in Europe. Students and teachers work together on exciting projects, especially in fields like engineering and computer science.

Close to Nature

Even though Aachen is a city, it is close to beautiful nature. The city is near the Eifel hills and the High Fens, where you can go hiking or enjoy the fresh air. The nearby Wurm river valley offers many chances to explore and have fun outdoors.

Aachen is a city where history, culture, and nature come together, making it a wonderful place to visit or live.
