Who Was Charlemagne?
Charlemagne was a very important ruler from long ago. He lived in a time when Europe was made up of many small kingdoms. Charlemagne helped bring many of these lands together under one rule. He became known as a great leader and a helper of learning.
Charlemagne was born on April 2, 748. He grew up in a royal family. His father was Pepin the Short, and his mother was Bertrada of Laon. After his father passed away, Charlemagne and his brother Carloman I became kings. When his brother passed away, Charlemagne became the only ruler.
His Big Kingdom
Charlemagne ruled over many lands. He was King of the Franks, King of the Lombards, and later became Emperor of the Carolingian Empire. He made his capital in Aachen. From there, he helped people learn more by starting schools and bringing scholars to his court. This time is called the Carolingian Renaissance.
Because of his work, many people call him the “Father of Europe.” Some royal families today can trace their beginnings back to him. Charlemagne is remembered in stories, art, and many places across Europe.
