Welcome to Bern
Bern is a special city in Switzerland. It is not the biggest city, but it is very important. People often call it the "federal city" because it is where the country's government works. About 146,000 people live in Bern, making it the fifth biggest city in Switzerland.
A City with History
Bern has a long and interesting history. People have lived there for a very long time. The city was started around the year 1191 by a family called the Zähringer. In 1353, Bern joined a group of cities and areas called the Swiss Confederacy. Today, Bern is where the Swiss government meets, a job it has had since 1848.
Fun Places to Visit
Bern’s old town is very special. In 1983, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it is a place that is very important to the world because of its history and beauty. You can walk through old streets and see beautiful buildings. One famous spot is the Zytglogge, a clock tower with moving figures that tell time in a fun way.
Another fun place is the Bärengraben (Bear Pit). Here, you can see real bears living in a special open-air space. Bern’s name might even come from a bear! A story says the city’s founder saw a bear first when he was hunting and named the city after it.
Nice Weather and Nature
Bern is in the middle of Switzerland, with beautiful mountains called the Bernese Alps close by. The city is on a piece of land surrounded by a river called the Aare. This makes Bern a nice place to visit, with many bridges and green spaces.
The weather in Bern is usually mild. July is warm, and January can be cold. Sometimes it snows in winter, and you might see people enjoying the snow and ice.
A Place for Everyone
Bern has many things to do and see. You can visit the grand Gothic cathedral called the Münster, or the Federal Palace where Switzerland’s parliament meets. There are also many museums and gardens, like the Rose Garden (Rosengarten), which has a lovely view of the city.
Bern is a city full of history, nature, and fun places to explore. Whether you are looking at old buildings, watching bears, or enjoying the weather, Bern has something for everyone!
