What is a Dusky Megapode?

A dusky megapode is a special kind of bird that lives in Indonesia. It is about as tall as a big book, measuring around 41 cm (16 inches) long. This bird looks blackish with a short pointed crest on its head and bare red skin on its face. Both males and females look the same.

Where Does It Live?

Dusky megapodes make their homes in forests and swamps, including places with lots of trees and water like mangroves. You can find them in the Maluku and Raja Ampat Islands, which are beautiful groups of islands in Indonesia.

How Does It Take Care of Its Eggs?

This bird is famous for a very unusual way of taking care of its eggs. Instead of sitting on them to keep them warm, the dusky megapode makes a special mound from earth, leaves, sand, gravel, and sticks. These mounds can be very big—up to 11 meters (36 feet) wide and almost 5 meters (16 feet) tall! The heat from the decaying material in the mound helps the eggs hatch.

Why Do We Know About It?

People know about the dusky megapode because it is fairly common where it lives and is not in immediate danger. Its name honors a French explorer named Louis Claude Desaulses de Freycinet, who helped study this interesting bird.
