Where is Greece?
Greece is a beautiful country in Southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula. It touches Albania, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the east. Seas surround Greece on three sides. The Aegean Sea lies to the east, the Cretan and Libyan seas are to the south, and the Ionian Sea is to the west, separating it from Italy.
Land and Islands
Greece has many different landscapes. Its mainland is mostly mountainous and stretches into a peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea. Greece also has many islands. The largest islands are Crete, Euboea, Lesvos, Rhodes, Chios, Kefalonia, and Corfu. There are also island groups like the Dodecanese and the Cyclades. Smaller peninsulas such as the Chalkidiki and the Peloponnese stick out from the mainland.
Tall Mountains and Sunny Skies
Greece lies between 35°N and 42°N latitude, and from 19°E to 28°E longitude. The land has tall hills, deep valleys, and beautiful islands. The tallest mountain is Mount Olympus. It is 2,917 meters high. Greece gets lots of sunshine. Summers are hot and dry. Winters are cold and rainy. Snow falls in the mountains but rarely on the islands or low areas. Spring and autumn are short seasons between winter and summer, and summer and winter.
