Welcome to Greece!

Greece is a beautiful country in Southeast Europe. It sits on the southern tip of the Balkan peninsula. Greece has a long coastline along the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Sea of Crete, and the Mediterranean Sea. It also includes thousands of islands!

People often call Greece the "cradle of Western civilisation." This is because many important ideas started here. Think of democracy, Western philosophy, Western literature, big scientific thoughts, theatre, and the Olympic Games. The Ancient Greeks lived in small independent cities called poleis. Later, their culture spread far and wide after the adventures of Alexander the Great.

Today, Greece is a modern country with a rich past. It joined the European Union in 1981. Greece loves tourists and is famous for its ships. Even when things get tricky, Greece stays a developed country with a good standard of living. You can visit many special places that tell stories from long ago.

Greece’s real name is Ελλάδα (Elláda). Long ago, it was called Ἑλλάς (Hellas). Sometimes people still use this old name in poems or special ways. The words Greece and Greek come from old Latin words. They were inspired by an ancient Greek tribe called the Graeci who lived in southern Italy, a place known as Magna Graecia.

Greece has a very long history. People have lived there for thousands of years. The land was home to some of the earliest folks in Europe. Over time, it grew into amazing cultures like the Cycladic, Minoan, and Mycenaean. One of the most famous spots is the “Treasury of Atreus” from the 13th century BC in Mycenae.

Greece is full of mountains and lovely islands. The tallest mountain is Mount Olympus. About 227 islands have people living on them. The biggest island is Crete. Others you might hear about are Euboea, Lesbos, and Rhodes. Greece has a warm climate. Winters are gentle and rainy. Summers are hot and dry. In the mountains, it can be cooler. You can find forests and animals like brown bears and sea turtles.

Greece is a parliamentary republic. This means people choose leaders to make rules for them. The President is the special head of state, but the Prime Minister runs the government. Right now, the Prime Minister is Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Greece works closely with other countries. It is part of groups like the European Union and NATO.

Greece’s culture is rich and beautiful. It started long ago and keeps growing. From ancient times, Greeks made big steps in government, art, and science. They also created wonderful stories, poems, and plays. Their ideas about beauty and order still shape art and culture today. One famous place is the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, where plays are still performed every year since 1955.
