Ancient Halicarnassus
Halicarnassus was a lovely old Greek city in Caria, in Anatolia. Today, this spot is part of Bodrum in Turkey. The city sat right by the sea on the Gulf of Gökova, making it a nice place for traders and visitors.
The most famous thing about Halicarnassus is the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. This grand tomb was built for a ruler named Mausolus. It was so amazing that people still talk about it today. The word “mausoleum” comes from this wonderful building. It was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Halicarnassus was special because it had its own way of ruling itself, even when many other places had kings. The city stayed friendly with the Persian Empire for a long time. Later, a famous leader named Alexander the Great visited the city.
Today, you can still see parts of the old city, like walls and a big theater. The place now has a castle called the Castle of St. Peter, built much later by the Knights of Rhodes. It’s a fun spot to imagine life from long ago!
