Hokkaido

Hokkaido is the big, cold island in the north of Japan. It is the second-largest island and has lots of snow in winter. The biggest city is Sapporo, which is also the capital.

Where It Is

Hokkaido is separated from the main part of Japan, called Honshu, by the Tsugaru Strait. The two islands are connected by a special tunnel called the Seikan Tunnel. Hokkaido is near Russia and has coastlines along the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the Pacific Ocean.

Weather and Nature

Hokkaido has cooler summers and very cold, snowy winters. It is famous for its heavy snowfall, which makes it a great place for winter sports like skiing. The island has many mountains, forests, and wetlands. You can find animals like the Ussuri brown bear and plants like the Sakhalin fir.

Cities and Towns

The largest city is Sapporo. Other important cities include Hakodate, Asahikawa, and Kushiro. There are also many smaller towns and villages all over the island.

Farms and Food

Even with lots of snow, Hokkaido is good for growing food. It has many farms where they grow wheat, potatoes, and raise beef cattle. The island is also known for its fisheries.

Fun Things to Do

Hokkaido has many fun activities. In winter, you can enjoy the Sapporo Snow Festival with big snow and ice sculptures. In summer, you can visit beautiful parks and try local foods like Sapporo ramen. The island also has many sports teams and holds the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo.

Traveling Around

Most people fly to Hokkaido through New Chitose Airport near Sapporo. You can also take a train on the Hokkaido Shinkansen from Tokyo, which takes about four hours to reach near Hakodate. There are also ferries and a good road network to explore the island.

Hokkaido is a wonderful place with cold winters, beautiful nature, and lots of fun things to see and do!
