Jazz is a happy and exciting kind of music that started a long time ago. It began in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Jazz mixes many musical traditions, like blues, ragtime, European harmony, African rhythms, spirituals, hymns, marches, vaudeville songs, and dance music.

What makes jazz special is the way musicians improvise, or make up music on the spot. This makes every jazz performance feel fresh and fun. Jazz has many styles, like New Orleans jazz, swing big bands, bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, free jazz, and jazz fusion. Each style brings something new and exciting to the music.

The word jazz might have come from an old slang term meaning "energy." It first appeared in writing in 1912, used to describe a tricky baseball pitch. By 1915, it was used to talk about music, and soon after, it became linked to the lively sounds of New Orleans.

Jazz is enjoyed all around the world. It continues to grow and change, mixing with other music styles and staying a beloved part of music history. Famous jazz musicians like Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong helped make jazz popular and loved by many people.
