The Middle Ages
The Middle Ages was a long time in history. It happened in Europe from about the year 500 until around the year 1500. We call this time the medieval period. It sits between classical antiquity — the time of ancient Greece and Rome — and the modern period, when the world started changing very fast.
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, many new things happened. New kingdoms formed, like the Byzantine Empire in the east. Life got better in some ways. People learned new ways to farm. Towns grew bigger. Artists made beautiful buildings, like Gothic architecture. These years helped shape our world today.
The Middle Ages had some hard times, too. There were years when crops did not grow well, and people felt hungry. A sickness called the Black Death made many people very sick. Even with these challenges, this time was full of new ideas and changes.
People often think of the Middle Ages as a "dark" time, but that is not the whole story. Many smart people lived then. They thought about the world and wrote books. They knew the Earth was round, not flat! The Middle Ages were a time of growth, learning, and wonderful creations.
