What is a Pyrophile?

A pyrophile is a special kind of insect that loves places where fires have been. These insects are very good at finding areas after a fire. They use their special smell organs to detect smoke and burned plants. Some even have heat sensors to stay safe from flames.

Where Do Pyrophiles Live?

Pyrophiles are often found with special plants called pyrophytes. These plants also need fires as part of their life. Pyrophiles can quickly move to places that have recently burned. They are very rare, with only a few types known out of all the insects in the world.

Pyrophiles and People

Some pyrophiles, like the European fire beetle Melanophila cuspidata, have helped scientists. These insects can detect smells from plants during fires. This helps scientists give early warnings about wildfires in places where wood is worked on.
