The Quraysh

The Quraysh were an Arab tribe that lived in the beautiful city of Mecca. They were very important long ago, before the time of Islam. The Quraysh had ten main families, and one of the most famous was the Banu Hashim. This family was special because Muhammad, the founder of Islam, was born into it.

The Quraysh were great traders. They traveled with their goods on big trips called caravans. These trips went from the Indian Ocean to East Africa and all the way to the Mediterranean. Their trading made them rich and helped them become powerful leaders in Mecca.

The Quraysh also took care of the Kaaba, a very important sacred place in Mecca. Many people from all over would visit the Kaaba for special trips called pilgrimages. The Quraysh made sure everything was ready for these visitors and helped keep the city running smoothly.

Even though there were some difficult times when new ideas about religion started, most of the Quraysh later joined the community of Islam. Many of their leaders became important in the new Islamic world, helping to guide and support the growing number of people who believed in Islam.
