Meet the Stegosaurus

The Stegosaurus is one of the most famous dinosaurs ever found. It lived a very long time ago, during the Late Jurassic period, which was between 155 and 145 million years ago. These gentle giants were plant-eaters and walked on all four legs.

Stegosauruses are best known for the special plates along their backs and the spikes on their tails. These plates looked like a roof on their back, which is why their name means "roof lizard." The spikes on their tails were called a thagomizer. Scientists think these spikes might have helped protect them, while the plates could have helped control their body temperature or show off to others of their kind.

Fossils of Stegosaurus have been found in places like Colorado, Wyoming, and even Portugal. These fossils were first discovered during an exciting time called the Bone Wars by a scientist named Othniel Charles Marsh at Dinosaur Ridge National Landmark. Since then, many museums around the world have displayed Stegosaurus skeletons, helping everyone learn about this amazing dinosaur.

Stegosauruses had small heads with beak-like mouths, perfect for eating low-growing plants like ferns and mosses. They had strong bodies and could grow up to 25 feet long! Today, Stegosaurus is one of the most recognized dinosaurs and appears in many books, movies, and toys. Their unique look and gentle nature make them a favorite among dinosaur fans everywhere.
