Greece is a beautiful country in Southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula. It touches Albania, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the east. Seas surround Greece on three sides. The Aegean Sea lies to the east, the Cretan and Libyan seas are to the south, and the Ionian Sea is to the west, separating it from Italy.
Greece has many different landscapes. Its mainland is mostly mountainous and stretches into a peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea. Greece also has many islands. The largest islands are Crete, Euboea, Lesvos, Rhodes, Chios, Kefalonia, and Corfu. There are also island groups like the Dodecanese and the Cyclades. Smaller peninsulas such as the Chalkidiki and the Peloponnese stick out from the mainland. The Peloponnese connects to the rest of Greece by a narrow strip of land called the Isthmus of Corinth.
Greece lies between 35°N and 42°N latitude, and from 19°E to 28°E longitude. This special mix of lands has helped shape Greece's history, culture, and way of life for thousands of years. That is why Greece is such an important place in the world.
