Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic, is a country in Southeast Europe. It is located on the southern tip of the Balkan peninsula. It shares borders with Albania, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Greece has a long coastline along the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Sea of Crete, and the Mediterranean Sea. It also includes thousands of islands.
Greece is known as the cradle of Western civilisation. It is where democracy, Western philosophy, Western literature, major scientific ideas, theatre, and the Olympic Games began. The Ancient Greeks lived in independent city-states called poleis. Later, their culture spread after conquests by Alexander the Great.
Today, Greece is a modern nation with a rich history. It joined the European Union in 1981. Greece is known for its tourism and shipping industries. Even with economic challenges, Greece remains a developed country with a high standard of living. It has many important historical sites recognized worldwide.
Name

The native name of Greece is Ελλάδα (Elláda). In the past, the country was sometimes called Ἑλλάς (Hellas). This name is used in poetry or old-fashioned ways today.
The words Greece and Greek come from old Latin words Graecia and Graecus. These names were inspired by the Graeci (Γραικοί), an ancient Greek tribe that lived in southern Italy, a region known as Magna Graecia.
History

Greece has a long history that goes back thousands of years. The land was home to some of the earliest people in Europe. Over time, it developed into advanced cultures like the Cycladic, Minoan, and Mycenaean.
Ancient Greece is known for its important contributions. This time saw the rise of city-states, the development of democracy in Athens, and great achievements in art, science, and philosophy. The Greeks fought wars such as the Greco-Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian War. Later came the Hellenistic era after the conquests of Alexander the Great.
During the Roman era, Greece became part of the Roman Empire and later the Byzantine Empire. The medieval period brought changes with the rise and fall of empires, including Ottoman rule starting in the 15th century.
In modern times, Greece fought for independence from the Ottoman Empire in the early 1800s. It became a kingdom and later a republic. Greece has been part of the European Union and continues to be an important country in Europe.
Geography

Greece is in Southern and Southeast Europe. It has a very long coastline and is part of the Mediterranean basin. Greece has a large mainland and thousands of islands. These islands are in nine areas: Macedonia, Central Greece, Peloponnese, Thessaly, Epirus, Aegean Islands, Thrace, Crete, and Ionian Islands. The land is mostly mountains. Mount Olympus is the tallest mountain.
Greece has about 227 islands where people live. The biggest island is Crete. Others are Euboea, Lesbos, and Rhodes. The islands are in groups like the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. Greece has a Mediterranean climate. Winters are mild and wet. Summers are hot and dry. In the mountains, it can be cooler. Greece has forests and animals such as brown bears and sea turtles.
Politics

Greece is a parliamentary republic with three main parts: the executive, the legislative, and the judicial branches. The current constitution began in 1975 and has been updated. The main lawmaking group is a 300-member Parliament. The President of Greece is the ceremonial head of state, while the Prime Minister, currently Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has the real power to run the government.
Political life in Greece has several parties, most importantly New Democracy and the Panhellenic Socialist Movement. After changes from a financial crisis, newer parties such as SYRIZA have also grown. Greece has strong ties with other countries and is part of important groups, including the European Union and NATO. The military helps protect the country and works with others around the world.

Economy

Greece has a strong economy. It is the 15th largest economy in the European Union. The country’s economy is mostly based on services. Tourism and shipping are very important. Greece is one of the most visited countries in the world. It also has the largest shipping industry in the world.
Demographics

Eurostat says Greece had about 10.6 million people in 2022. Greece's population is getting older, and fewer babies are being born. The fertility rate is low, and the median age is high.
Most Greeks live in cities. The biggest cities are Athens and Thessaloniki. Other important cities are Patras, Heraklion, Larissa, Volos, Rhodes, Ioannina, Agrinio, Chania, and Chalcis.
Most people in Greece speak Greek. There are also small groups who speak Turkish, Bulgarian, Romani, and other languages. Many Greeks moved to places like the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Germany. Recently, some people from Albania, Bulgaria, and Romania have moved to Greece.
