Cadbury Dairy Milk is a famous British brand of milk chocolate that has been made by Cadbury since 1905. All of the Dairy Milk products are made with milk chocolate, which makes them special and loved by many people.

The popular chocolate bar was created by George Cadbury Jr. By 1914, it became the best-selling item at Cadbury. Even today, more than one hundred years later, it remains one of the top chocolate bars in Britain, holding the title of best-selling chocolate bar there in 2014.

In 1928, Cadbury started using the "glass and a half" slogan to show that their Dairy Milk chocolate had more milk in it than ever before. This idea helped make the brand even more popular.

You can find Dairy Milk chocolate in many parts of the world, including China, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. In the United States, the Hershey Company makes and sells Dairy Milk under licence from Cadbury, though their version uses a slightly different recipe than the original.

History

Cadbury chocolate bars (Dairy Milk back of tray), c. 1910

In June 1905, in Birmingham, England, George Cadbury Jr made Cadbury's first Dairy Milk bar with more milk than earlier chocolate bars; by 1914 it became the company's top-selling product. Over the years, many new flavors were added to the Dairy Milk line, such as Fruit and Nut in 1926 and Whole Nut in 1930.

In 1928, Cadbury introduced the "glass and a half" slogan to show the higher milk content in the Dairy Milk bar. In 2005, Cadbury buried a time capsule at its Bournville factory, planning to open it when Dairy Milk turns 200. In 2018, Cadbury launched a new Dairy Milk version with 30% less sugar.

Variations

Cadbury Dairy Milk Bubbly

The original Cadbury Dairy Milk bar, featuring "a glass and a half of fresh milk," was launched in 1905. Since then, many tasty variations have been created, such as Caramel, Fruit & Nut with raisins and almonds, and Whole Nut with hazelnuts.

Other fun versions include Dairy Milk Silk from India, Dairy Milk Ritz with salty Ritz crackers from the United Kingdom, and Dairy Milk with LU biscuits. There is also a Dairy Milk Oreo bar with an Oreo filling, and even a Vegemite flavoured bar with milk chocolate, caramel, and Vegemite, launched in Australia in 2015.

Ingredients and tastes for local markets

A report from 2007 explained that the British Cadbury Dairy Milk bar contains milk, sugar, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, vegetable fat, and emulsifiers. In the United States, the version made by Hershey starts with sugar and also includes lactose, emulsifier soy lecithin, and "natural and artificial flavorings." Cadbury aims to make the U.S. version taste similar to what people there are used to, which makes it closer to a Hershey bar but can taste a bit sour to people used to British chocolate.

Advertising

Cadbury has used many fun and creative ways to advertise its chocolates. In the 1970s, an ad for Cadbury's Fruit & Nut featured humorist Frank Muir singing a catchy tune inspired by Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker.

In 2007, Cadbury started a new campaign called Gorilla, which became very popular. These ads featured famous songs like "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins and "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen. Later campaigns included music from artists like Bonnie Tyler and Bon Jovi.

In India, Cadbury used cricket, a sport loved by many, in one of its ads, which was very successful. The company also used traditions, like sharing sweets for special occasions, to connect with families. Today, Cadbury has a big share of the chocolate market in India.

Grey imports in U.S.

In 2015, Hershey's stopped allowing imports of Cadbury chocolate into the United States that broke its trademark rules. People who tried both types of chocolate said that the British Dairy Milk tasted smoother and felt better in the mouth compared to the Hershey's version.

Recalls

In July 2007, Cadbury was fined Β£1 million because some of its products might have been unsafe to eat due to a possible infection. The company had to spend a lot of money to make sure the factory was clean again.

Later in September 2007, Cadbury had to recall some chocolate bars because of a printing mistake that left out important allergy information. In 2008, some Cadbury Dairy Milk made in China was found to contain a harmful substance, which caused concern for safety.
