The modern era or the modern period is considered the current historical period of human history. It originally described events in Europe and Western history after the Classical antiquity and the Middle Ages, starting around the year 1500. Important events included the Reformation, which led to Protestantism in Germany and other places.

Today, the modern period usually refers to events from the 19th century until now. This time includes major changes such as the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, and the growth of nationalism and a liberal international order.

During the modern era, there have been big developments in science, politics, warfare, and technology. It has also been an Age of Discovery and a time of globalization. European powers and their colonies expanded their influence around the world, shaping modern lifestyles everywhere.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, modernist ideas in art, politics, science, and culture spread widely. This era is linked to the rise of individualism, capitalism, socialism, and urbanization. Many people believed in the good that technology and political change could bring.

However, the rapid changes of this time also caused wars and conflicts, as well as challenges to old religious and ethical ideas. Some people have criticized the optimism of constant progress, and the influence of Western Europe and North America over other parts of the world.

Terminology

Eras are hard to define clearly, but historians often talk about the modern era starting around the year 1500. This was a time of big changes in the Western world, with events like the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the invention of the Gutenberg's moveable type printing press in the 1450s, and Christopher Columbus's voyage to the Americas in 1492. The term "modern" began to be used shortly before 1585 to describe this new period.

The words "modernity" and "modernism" describe new ways of thinking that emerged during this time. "Postmodernism", a term from 1949, refers to a movement in art rather than a specific historical period. These ideas mostly come from European history, but they have been used in different ways around the world, especially where cultures met during the Age of Discovery.

Characteristics

The modern era brought big changes in many parts of life, like politics, industry, science, and culture. These changes helped turn the old world into what we call the modern or new world. People started to see things differently and question old ways of doing things.

In western countries, many old systems, like monarchies and feudal economies, were replaced by new ideas about democracy and freedom. These changes affected how people thought about science, society, and the world around them. Historians study these events to understand how the world has changed since the Middle Ages.

The early modern period began around the late 1400s and lasted into the 1700s. This time saw many big changes in Europe and the world. Important events include the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg, which helped spread ideas more easily. Explorers like Christopher Columbus began traveling to new parts of the world, starting contact between Europe and places like the Americas.

During this period, there were also many wars and political changes. For example, the Thirty Years' War was a long and difficult conflict in Europe. Later, the American Revolution led to the United States becoming an independent country, and the French Revolution changed the government of France. These years were a time of discovery, new ideas, and big shifts in how countries were run.

The 19th century was a time of big changes. Some historians say it began in 1815 after the Congress of Vienna and ended in 1914 when World War I started. Others say it started even earlier, in 1789 with the French Revolution.

During this time, big empires like the Spanish, Portuguese, and Ottoman Empires started to get weaker. New ways of making things, called the Industrial Revolution, began in Britain and spread around the world. This changed how people lived and worked forever, much like when people first learned to farm a long time ago. The Industrial Revolution brought new machines, factories, and ways to move goods, like trains and steam-powered ships.

Many countries worked to end slavery. The British Empire helped stop the slave trade and encouraged other countries to do the same. By the end of the century, many places had freed enslaved people, including Russia, the United States, and Brazil. Also, European countries began exploring and claiming parts of Africa during what is called the Scramble for Africa.

The 20th century saw huge changes in the world. Technology, medicine, and industry advanced quickly, affecting everyone, even in faraway places. New inventions like airplanes, nuclear power, and computers changed daily life.

Big political events shaped the century too. Two world wars caused great conflict, and after World War II, the world was divided between two powerful groups during the Cold War. Countries gained independence, and new nations were formed. Many people moved to new places, and societies changed in many ways.

At the end of the twentieth century, the world faced many challenges. New technologies like computers and the Internet changed everyday life, but problems remained. The gap between wealthy and poor countries grew larger, and diseases such as West Nile, Avian influenza, malaria, and HIV spread in many areas.

The world also saw increased globalization, particularly Americanization, which led to some people feeling unhappy about Western influence. Issues like terrorism, dictatorship, and the spread of nuclear weapons were also major concerns during this time.
