Abarth & C. S.p.A.
Abarth & C. S.p.A. was an exciting Italian company that made fast racing cars and special performance cars. It was started by a man named Carlo Abarth in 1949. Today, the company is owned by Stellantis, a big car company, through its Italian part.
The Abarth logo is very special. It shows a scorpion on a yellow and red background, with a small Italian flag in the middle, and the word “Abarth” written in black. The scorpion was chosen because it represents strength and speed, which are important for racing cars.
History
Carlo Abarth began as the sporting director of the Cisitalia racing team in 1947. When the team closed the next year, Abarth took its parts and started Abarth & C. in Bologna on March 31, 1949, with money from Armando Scagliarini. He picked the Scorpio as the company logo because it matched his astrology sign.
Abarth used parts from Cisitalia to build sports cars and also sold performance parts for Fiat, Lancia, and other cars. In 1952, Abarth started a famous partnership with Fiat. Over the years, Abarth raced in many events, competing with cars like the Porsche 904 and Ferrari Dino. Drivers such as Tazio Nuvolari and Hans Herrmann had great success with Abarth cars.
In 1971, Fiat bought Abarth, and the company helped prepare Fiat's rally cars. Later, Abarth became part of Fiat's racing group. In 2007, Abarth became independent again under Fiat, launching special versions of Fiat cars like the Abarth Grande Punto. Today, the brand is based in Turin and makes special, high-performance cars.
