About Safekipedia
A child-friendly encyclopedia, built on Wikipedia, made by one person.
Who makes it
Safekipedia is an independent project built and run by Gonzalo Vallejos. It started with a simple problem: children ask about dinosaurs, volcanoes, planets and famous people, and the best free source of answers, Wikipedia, is written for adults. Safekipedia is the version of Wikipedia I wanted to hand to a child.
There is no company behind it, no advertising, and no tracking of readers. The site is free, and the costs of running it are covered by donations.
How every article is made
Each Safekipedia article begins as a Wikipedia article. The original text is rewritten at three reading levels, Explorer, Adventurer and Discoverer, so the same topic can be read by a six-year-old and a twelve-year-old. The Parents Guide explains what each level keeps and what it leaves out.
Before an article is published, it passes through the same checks every time:
- Facts come from Wikipedia. The rewrite keeps Wikipedia's facts, dates and names. It changes the language and the depth, not the knowledge. Every article links back to the original so grown-ups can compare.
- Sensitive content is removed or reframed. Explicit material, graphic violence and topics that are not for children are left out, or explained calmly in a way that suits the reading level.
- Pictures are checked. Each image from the original article is reviewed for age-appropriateness before it is shown.
- Links stay inside Safekipedia. Every link in an article leads to another Safekipedia article, so children can explore freely without leaving the site.
- Readers can flag problems. Every article has a report button. Reports are reviewed by hand and the article is fixed or taken down.
The rewriting is done by an AI language model following rules written for each reading level. Those rules are revised regularly, and when they improve, articles are regenerated. Like Wikipedia itself, an article can still contain a mistake. If you find one, please report it.
