Abilene Christian University

Abilene Christian University (ACU) is a private Christian university in Abilene, Texas. It was started in 1906 and was first called Childers Classical Institute. Today, it is known as a place for research and learning, offering many advanced programs and degrees.

The university is connected to the Churches of Christ, which helps shape its values and community spirit. Over time, ACU has become an important place for students to learn and grow, with students coming from many different places.

History

Abilene Christian University started in 1906 as Childers Classical Institute in Abilene, Texas. It began with 25 students and included a lower school starting in the seventh grade. In 1912, the school began calling itself Abilene Christian College, and it officially changed its name in 1920.

The school’s student newspaper, The Optimist, started in 1912, and the yearbook, The Prickly Pear, began in 1916. In 1951, the college received official recognition for its quality from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

In 1976, the school changed its name to Abilene Christian University. It celebrated its 100th year in 2005–06. In 2015, the university opened a new campus in Addison, Texas, called ACU Dallas, offering new graduate programs.

Academics

In 2022, Abilene Christian University changed its school setup. They made three new colleges to show they are a top university.

The university has many special approvals to make sure its programs are good quality. Its business programs are approved by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and its engineering program is approved by ABET. Social Work programs are approved by the Council on Social Work Education, and Education programs have special approval too. The School of Nursing is approved by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and the Graduate School of Theology is approved by the Association of Theological Schools.

Traditions

At Abilene Christian University, students enjoy special traditions. One is called Sing Song. In February, student groups sing fun songs without instruments, called a cappella. They often wear costumes that match their songs, like characters from stories. The costumes sometimes change during the show, making it more exciting.

Another tradition is Summit. It used to be called Lectureship. This event brings people together for talks and workshops about ideas from the Bible. The topic changes each year, and it usually happens in September so more people can come.

Abilene Christian University Press

Abilene Christian University has a special group called ACU Press. It began in 1983 to write books about the beliefs of Churches of Christ. Today, it is part of a big group of university presses in America. It writes about Christian schools, the history of West Texas, and living a Christian life. Each year, it publishes around 36 books. Some well-known writers for the press include Rubel Shelly, Rick Ostrander, Darryl Tippens, Edward Fudge, Larry M. James, and Walt McDonald.

Student media

Abilene Christian University started a radio station called KACU in 1986. It is like a local NPR station. When it first started, some people were worried the school might only use it to share its beliefs. So, community members helped watch over the station for ten years to make sure that didn’t happen.

There is also a student news group called The Optimist. It is run by students and makes news stories and other media projects.

Research

In August 2022, Abilene Christian University asked to build a special research reactor. They hope to start it up by December 2025.

Athletics

Abilene Christian University, called the Wildcats, has a long history in sports. They started in Division II of the NCAA and later moved to Division I. They have been part of different conferences, including the Southland Conference and the Western Athletic Conference.

The university has many sports achievements. The men's and women's track and field teams have won many national championships. The football team was national champions in the past. Some ACU athletes have also competed in the Olympic Games.

Social clubs

Abilene Christian University has many student groups called "social clubs." These are like groups known as fraternities and sororities at other colleges.
